Academic Programs

As academic and research institutions around the world seek to expose students and faculty to global experts, they are increasingly expanding their interactions beyond one-to-one faculty relationships to create broad-based student exchange and research programs.

The Dado & Maria Banatao GLOBE Center at UC Berkeley works with international partner universities to establish substantial mutually beneficial educational and research programs. Programs span from relationships with one department to a College of Engineering-wide relationship around a multi-disciplinary theme (bio-technology, energy, nanotechnology, etc.). Comprehensive partnerships will likely include visiting student programs, visiting faculty for curriculum development, courses offered through distance education, and collaborative research.

In visiting student programs, undergraduate or graduate students come to Berkeley to take courses in engineering. GLOBE organized activities enable them to enhance their experience and understanding of the Bay Area culture of innovation through interaction with Bay Area corporations, UC Berkeley alumni and friends, and the many area attractions.

In curriculum development programs, visiting faculty come to Berkeley to adapt new educational topics to their home university curricula.

Distance education programs enable the expansion of courses available at a partner institution and also enable overseas students the opportunity to experience a Berkeley-style education before their first semester at Berkeley.

With the establishment of collaborative research programs, faculty from both institutions build on each other’s expertise to help solve some of the world’s most pressing technological problems.

The incorporation of these elements into a comprehensive relationship enables shared learning, the development of close collaborations, and intensive advances in research in a structured, productive, long-term relationship.
