UC Berkeley College of Engineering faculty have numerous individual relationships with colleagues around the world with whom they conduct collaborative research. In order to achieve greater scale to conduct a greater breadth of research in areas of specific interest to partner countries and universities, the GLOBE Center has worked with faculty and the administration to establish research partnerships with multiple (10+) UCB Faculty and counterparts in partner locations.
To date a sampling of a few of such collaborations are:
- Singapore BEARS: The Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore
- PCARI: The Philippines California Advanced Research Institutes
- TBSI: the Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute
Established in 2013, the Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore has focused on energy research, from energy efficient and sustainable buildings in the tropics to advanced materials for energy technologies. BEARS faculty work with colleagues at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University on numerous projects, also engaging with industry, and conducting concurrent research at UC Berkeley. BEARS maintains its own offices and laboratories at the CREATE campus in Singapore.
The Philippine California Advanced Research Institutes program began in 2015 with a focus on research in digital infrastructure and precision medicine and healthcare innovations. In its first four years the program has engaged with over 15 UC Berkeley professors partnering with professors from University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, De la Salle University and others.
The Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute was launched in 2015 and brings together 20 faculty from across the UC Berkeley campus with Tsinghua faculty in a collaborative research and education program. Faculty and graduate students from both campuses visit their counterparts in Shenzhen and Berkeley.
