THE GLOBAL ENGINEER

In addition to bringing the best of the world to Berkeley Engineering, we have created a suite of programs and resources to facilitate Berkeley Engineering students engaging with the best of the rest of the world.  Our current three programs include one Berkeley Engineering course (ENGIN 187), a study-travel program, and resources for overseas internships and other educational programs.

ENGIN 187 Global Engineering:
The Challenges of Globalization and Disruptive Innovation

ENGIN 187 is a 1-unit for-credit course offered to expose students to different countries and the challenges of globalization of technology businesses into and out of the United States.  In some semesters, schedules permitting, the course may include a short trip to visit the country of focus for that semester.  In Fall 2019, this focus will be on Taiwan.

GLOBE Ambassadors

The GLOBE Ambassadors program is a non-credit study-travel program that enables Berkeley Engineering students, primarily those with little or no international experience, to learn about countries and regions and how technology innovation is conducted in those countries.  In Spring 2018, the program featured preparatory sessions at UC Berkeley followed by one week of travel to the Philippines and Singapore.

Outgoing Programs

In addition to opportunities for international experience through ENGIN 187 and GLOBE Ambassadors, there are numerous opportunities for students to experience a start to their career as global engineers through internships and study abroad programs. The resources listed are partial and are updated periodically as we speak with institutions about their programs

GLOBE Scholars

The College of Engineering’s Dado and Maria Banatao GLOBE Center seeks to encourage engineering students to explore engineering careers overseas and to increase students’ understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion globally. To achieve this, we have established a travel funding program to support undergraduate engineering majors seeking to undertake summer corporate, institutional, or academic research internships abroad.

Please note that the internship list is partial and is updated from time to time and should not be considered an exhaustive list. Students are encouraged to consider other UC Berkeley resources (links also provided below) for internships and study abroad. Links provided here are those institutions with whom GLOBE staff have had conversations regarding internship and overseas study opportunities but do not imply, indicate, or otherwise suggest that any such organization or any product or service of such organization is connected or affiliated with, or is endorsed, favored, or supported by, or is opposed by the University of California. Similarly, unless otherwise stated, these opportunities do not indicate the possibility of receiving UC Berkeley academic credit for overseas study. Opportunities for the College of Engineering Faculty seeking seed funding are also listed below.
